1.In one paragraph
Food Made Clear guides are educational information for general awareness only. They are not medical advice, not a medical device, and not a substitute for professional care. Dietary needs in diabetes, kidney disease and hypertension are individual and change with your blood results, medications and stage of disease. Always consult your GP, dietitian or care team before changing your diet, and follow their advice where it differs from our guides. If you have been given fluid, potassium, phosphate or protein targets, those targets take priority over anything we publish. Never stop or change medication based on our guides. Nutrient data is sourced from public databases; naming a database as a data source does not imply any endorsement by that organisation.
2.What our guides are, and are not
Food Made Clear guides translate published UK clinical guidance and public nutrient data into plain-English food ratings. They are designed to help you understand the general direction of advice for a condition and to make everyday shopping and cooking easier to think about.
They are not:
- medical advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment plan;
- a medical device, and they are not regulated as one;
- a substitute for the individual advice of your GP, consultant, specialist nurse, pharmacist or registered dietitian;
- a meal plan or a statement of what you personally should eat.
3.Your care team comes first
Dietary needs in diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout and liver conditions are individual. They change with your blood results, your medicines and the stage of your condition. If anything in a guide differs from what your care team has told you, follow your care team.
If you have been given personal targets, for example for potassium, phosphate, sodium, protein, fluid or carbohydrate, those targets take priority over anything we publish. Never stop, start or change a medicine because of something you read in our guides.
4.Allergies and intolerances
When you tell us about a food allergy at checkout we remove or flag foods that are commonly associated with that allergen. We cannot know every ingredient in every product, recipe or restaurant dish, and cross-contamination is outside our control. Always read labels and ask about ingredients. If you carry an adrenaline auto-injector, keep carrying it.
5.Where our information comes from
Nutrient values come from public databases that we credit in every guide and on our methodology page. Naming a database or an organisation does not mean it has endorsed Food Made Clear. Values are averages for typical foods; brands, portions and cooking methods vary.
6.If you feel unwell
If you feel unwell or are worried about your health, contact your GP or call NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999. Signs that need urgent help include chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe swelling, confusion, very high or very low blood sugar, or an allergic reaction affecting your breathing or face.
We are a small publisher of educational materials and cannot provide clinical support or respond to medical emergencies.
7.Responsibility
By using our guides you accept that decisions about your diet and health are yours and your care team’s. Our terms of sale set out the limits of our liability. Nothing on this page limits your statutory rights as a consumer, or our liability for anything that cannot be limited by law.
